トゥールビヨンとは、時計の向きによる誤差を自動的に修正する機構で、基本的な原理は、時計の使用状態が縦か横かで歯車にかかる重力が見妙にかわり誤差が生じ、それを補正するために横向きを基本に、縦向きの時に誤差を修正する装置です。
非常に細かい複雑な機構で、高級な精密時計にのみ搭載されています。
時計の姿勢が変わること（具体的には、時計を立てたり横にしたり、ということ）によって等時性が変化することを「姿勢差」という。
トゥールビヨンは4番車の上に雁木車とアンクル、テンプ一式を取り付け、脱進器自体が回転（通常1分間に1回転）することにより、垂直方向の姿勢差を分散させる。
この機構は部品の点数も多く、細かな部品によって組み立てられるため高度な技術を要求され、また製作に時間を要することから価格も高額になる。
